We try so hard to keep others from ever really knowing what’s inside ourselves. We think that once that’s revealed to the world our weaknesses will be shown. Simply put, this exhibition is about breaking down your external walls that keep people from getting in — if only for an instant. Revealing that thing that we try so hard to never show, whether it be certain forms of emotion, an obsession for clay, or, you know, your unexplainable urge to build sandcastles but you’re too afraid to tell anyone.
To be quite honest, this show was about me exposing myself for who I am and to a limitless degree. At one point in my life, I was in a place where my walls were built so high that no person could get through them. My mom once told me “You have a wall up, and we’ll be waiting for you on the other side when you’re ready.”
That memory was what sparked the idea for this show. It catapulted me into doing whatever was necessary to reveal how breaking down those barriers is just as beautiful as what we find inside ourselves – and a million times more powerful than the walls we put up. Each piece from these broken walls has some element of raw, unglazed clay. This represents that our raw selves can be stunning…
All we need to do is break down the barriers.
